Zee Garcia is a Houston-born, Guatemalan mixed-media artist. They traverse through surrealist and cultural boundaries through traditional and digital collages. Influenced by the surrealists of the 20th century, Zee explores themes of the subconscious and channels the various emotions that people usually keep hidden from themselves. They describe their process as “trance-like,” when it comes to creating their collages, paying homage to the movement of surrealism in both method and practice. Inspired by their Guatemalan and K’iche heritage, they incorporate embroidery and textiles into their work while experimenting with various techniques of image making and capture such as cyanotypes and photography.
